چکیده

I discuss the advances in our understanding of the physics and morphology of the innermost regions of AGNs which will be possible thanks to the XMM unprecedented sensitivity and its moderate to high energy resolution.

The X - ray view of highly obscured AGN

The properties of Compton–thick AGN are reviewed, with particular emphasis on BeppoSAX hard X–ray observations. I also discuss evidence for the presence of Compton–thick, circumnuclear matter in unobscured AGN, and I briefly introduce the hellas2xmm 5–10 keV survey, discussed in more details in other contributions to this volume.

Most Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are 'obscured', i.e. the nucleus is hiding behind a screen of absorbing material. The advantage of having the nucleus obscured is to make easier the observations of those emission components which originate in circumnuclear matter outside the absorbing regions, because in this case they are not outshined by the nuclear emission. This is particularly important i...

Soft X - ray Spectroscopy of Seyfert 2 Galaxies

Soft X-ray spectroscopy of Seyfert 2 galaxies provides perhaps the best method to probe the possible connection between AGN activity and star formation. Obscuration of powerful radiation from the inferred nucleus allows for detailed study of circumnuclear emission regions. And soft X-ray spectroscopy of these regions allows for robust discrimination between warm gas radiatively-driven by the AG...

Infrared spectroscopy around 4 μ m of Seyfert 2 galaxies : Obscured broad line regions and coronal lines ⋆

The state of the matter that is obscuring a small circumnuclear region in active galactic nuclei can be probed by observations of its broad emission lines. Infrared lines are particularly useful since they penetrate significant columns of obscuring matter, the properties of which can be constrained by comparing infrared and X-ray obscuration. We report on new 4µm spectroscopy with ISAAC at the ...

AGN / starburst connection in action : the half million second RGS spectrum of NGC 1365

Context. High-resolution X-ray observations in the imaging and spectral domain have recently opened a new window on active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback onto the circumnuclear gas. Spectral diagnostics, as well as the remarkable morphological coincidence between [O iii] and X-rays, point to AGN photoionisation as the dominant ionisation mechanism on scales as large as a few kpc. Aims. In this ...
